Most of the emerging leaders I know overlap my agony over this challenge. We fear that the whole air has been manipulated far more than we realize by political parties seeking to shave percentage points off their opponent’s constituency. We see whatever we say get sucked into a vortex of politicized culture-wars rhetoric—and we’re pastors evangelists church-planters and disciple-makers not political culture warriors. Those who bring us honest questions are people we are trying to care for in Christ’s label not cultural enemies we’re trying to defeat. Frankly many of us don’t experience what we should evaluate about homosexuality. We’ve heard all sides but no lay has yet won our confidence so that we can say “it seems good to the Holy Spirit and us.” That alienates us from both the liberals and conservatives who be to know exactly what we should evaluate. change surface if we are convinced that all homosexual behavior is always sinful we comfort be to interact gay and lesbian people with more dignity gentleness and respect than our colleagues do. If we think that there may actually be a legitimate context for some homosexual relationships we know that the biblical arguments are nuanced and multilayered and the pastoral ramifications are staggeringly complex. My heart warms at Brian’s desire to care for those who ask the questions just as it rejoices at the label for dialogue with and reliance on the Holy Spirit for wisdom and understanding within each pastoral context that we attend. But my heart breaks with Brian’s assertion that at least on this air the truth of Scripture on this affect is somehow ambiguous and that we are awaiting clarification by the Holy Spirit as to what God really meant when he said that homosexual behaviour was sinful. Perhaps I approach these things too simplistically but I believe that sin is sin. That means that I also accept that no sin is more sinful than any other sin. All sin is sin. All disobedience is disobedience. Homosexuality is no more or less a sin than adultery and both are clearly against God’s evince. I like the sinner. I dislike the sin – but I refuse to re-label disobedience as obedience. I ordain furnish my all to help each one (including me) deal with the ramifications and legacies of our disobedience but I cannot see how that is possible if we refuse to adjudge the disobedience in the first place. Larry Craig did not use his power to appoint a completely unqualified lover to a cushy government job. This to me is funny and very sad. Do you really think we are hatched or something? We also are human beings and undergo families. It is very sad for me especially my family that the Christian alter tries to pass laws that do not allow gays any basic rights. Two examples would be basic domestic furnish benefits and hospital visitation rights. Additionally the Christian Right believes it to be okay to fire someone for having a homosexual orientation. This to me is crazy. How is that equality? The problem is that you are unable to look at a homosexual and see the person/individual. You react to see good just a pathological sexual deviant. The Christian right chooses to demonize homosexuality as if it is all bad. Sexual orientation is simply that it is sexual orientation. It is whom we are attracted to sexually and emotionally. We see heterosexuals who abuse their sexual orientation with sex/drug/alcohol addictions and other problems just as homosexuals. But yet you do not pathologize heterosexuality. Additionally it is preached that homosexuality is a sickness and these populate are the create of AIDS. In fact most AIDS cases are from heterosexual relations. Also. AIDS is a worldwide problem that affects people from all over the world. The Christian alter argues we be to focus more on medical issues like heart disease than AIDS. I do not accept because most heart disease cases are found in the US and Europe mainly because of poor fast and unhealthy lifestyle choices. Examples include but are not limited to not getting enough exercise smoking high saturated fats etc. It is important to say that homosexuals can have healthy loving relationships as well. But you ordain not look at that. Instead you move to a scripture on Sodom and Gomorrah. I undergo construe that scripture many times and it does not communicate about homosexuality. My sexual orientation is big move of my life but not everything. I undergo a partner a family a relationship with my parents and relationship with my sister brother in law and my nieces and nephews. I am close to all of them. However. So where does this hatred go from? I believe that it comes from churches and authorities in higher institutions such as the government. For example the military and their don't ask don't tell policy. Clearly we know what this says about gays. This sets up a good/bad tier system regarding sexual orientation. Again gay is bad. So I query what is the bear witness of that? According to the American Psychological Association the American Psychiatric Association and the American Counseling Association there is no supporting bear witness that suggests a significant difference between how homosexuals and heterosexuals broach with life and their problems. Fundamentalists such as Focus on the Family act a few examples and then lump gays into one category which says we are ill and egest. The Christian alter ignores or fails to recognize that heterosexuals do and have behaved in similar ways that they say homosexuals do. When a gay person does something do by. Fundamentalists are quick to point out that we all do it further perpetuating false untrue beliefs about all homosexuals. This clearly makes it more difficult to exist in the world. Despite my loving family and the loving give I undergo from them. I still undergo to live in this world. I must bring home the bacon and I must go to the grocery stores and malls. I undergo been almost gay bashed three times after leaving a gay bar with friends at different times and different places in my life in this so called free country. So you really do not understand the cater that you have as preachers or pastors? The unfortunate conjoin is that when you lecture that homosexuality is evil others take those views and believe it.
