I grew up in notoriously liberal Vancouver. Canada. But even so when I was in high school a million years ago (okay in the early 90s) no one was openly GLBT. The only out gay kid I knew was my friend Lynn who lived across the street. But Lynn went to an alternative school where everyone had issues and hers paled in comparison to those of the other kids. I was thinking about this as I read "Easy Out" a really interesting article in According to the article is just not as challenging as it once was for a lot of Massachusetts teens and many of the teens they feature seem to be pretty casual about sexual orientation. Of course this isn't the case across the country. Plenty of teens who are GLBT (or even suspected to be) are still targets of bigotry. But my hope is that the climate of tolerance discussed in the "Easy Out" will spread across the country. I'd love to hear any reactions to the article!
