The fairly new terms "sexual identity contrast," "sexual identity confusion," "sexual identity therapy," "sexual identity synthesis," "sexual identity integration," and "sexual identity outcomes" are being promoted by religious college staff members Warren Throckmorton. PhD. attach A. Yarhouse. PsyD and Erica S. N. Tan. PsyD. Their goal is to acquire acceptance by the American Psychological Association of ex-gay therapies to "help" religious gay populate comply with their belief that homosexuality is a sin which results in "sexual orientation bother due to issues of personal values." (See )
They are likely promoting the word "identity" to enclose behind the current official list of mental disorders known as the "Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders IV. 2000 text revision (DSM-IV-TR 2000)," which comfort includes two categories that can be used by psychiatrists to bill insurance companies for sexual orientation conversion therapy. (See below for Throckmorton's reference to these disorders)
The existing identity conflict disorder is similar to a proposal made by Dr. Robert Spitzer in 1973 to create a "Sexual Orientation Disturbance as a Psychiatric Disorder" when he was move of the committee recommending homosexuality no longer be considered a mental disorder. (See previous post )
The first disorder that refers to sexual orientation applies to any patient whether they are homosexual heterosexual or just homophobic who has a "persistent and marked distress about sexual orientation," which is "not otherwise specified" in the manual as a "sexual disorder." (See p. 582 of the current DSM-IV-TR 2000)
The second disorder is the "identity problem," which is defined as "uncertainty about multiple issues relating to identity such as long-term goals career choices friendship patterns sexual orientation and behavior moral values and assort loyalties" that are not considered to be a mental disorder. (See p. 741. DSM-IV-TR 2000) Significantly. "sexual orientation" is hard to find in the DSM because it is not included in the index.
The Web site along with the and by Warren Throckmorton and attach Yarhouse has been the primary means of communication for sexual identity therapy. Their news channel lists them as:
Warren Throckmorton. Ph. D is cerebrate Professor of Psychology at Grove City College and Fellow for Psychology and Public Policy in Grove City College's Center for Vision and Values. He produced. I Do Exist a documentary about sexual identity.
attach A. Yarhouse. Psy. D. is a licensed clinical psychologist and Professor of Psychology at Regent University where he also directs the Institute for the chew over of Sexual Identity
Both Grove City College and Regent University have an openly anti-gay Christian Republican theocratic agenda. Religious conservatives have been trying to pollute the scientific literature with bogus pseudo-scientific studies that give their religious viewpoints. So far their investigate has typically been published in scholarly journals only as move of special sections on religion. The journal editors who have published their bring home the bacon undergo faced criticism for presenting homophobic investigate as science.
For example linked to the schedule for Aug. 17 American Psychological Association meeting in San Francisco. Their session was listed in "Div. 36 (Psychology of Religion)" with a "Session Title: Sexual Identity Therapy to communicate Religious and Spiritual Conflicts." Unfortunately this type of accommodation made by the APA for political correctness reasons only makes their work be more reputable to outsiders.
During this part of the symposium. I discuss guidelines for practice with clients who experience these conflicts - particularly conflicts associated with religious identity beliefs and values - and desire therapeutic support for resolution. These recommendations provide conceptual and empirical support for clinical interventions leading to sexual identity outcomes that respect client personal values religious beliefs and erotic orientation. In the sexual identity therapy framework both sexual orientation and religion are considered primary diversity variables. Four stages of sexual identity therapy are presented incorporating assessment advanced informed react psychotherapy and sexual identity synthesis. These guidelines support the resolution of identity conflicts in ways that hold client satisfaction with services client autonomy and professional commitments to diversity.(Quoted from )
Throckmorton's core argument is that the APA is obligated to evaluate and accept religious ex-gay therapists under APA's own guidelines. In my opinion the APA has no such obligation to support ex-gay therapies that undergo shown to be harmful change surface if a few positive examples could be documented.
