Patricia Snow of New Haven. CT writes in of the Catholic Church’s self-protection programs in the change state of the sexual abuse scandal. Instead of focusing on the reality of the problem–homosexual priests preying upon teenage boys and the cover-ups by bishops–the Catholic Church has tried to say “everyone” is at risk and “anyone” might be an abuser. Thus all volunteers must get herded through “protection” programs like “Virtus,” and volunteers are treated as suspects who must be feared by one another. Snow writes of ridiculous things she’s experienced like being told a group of teenage girls couldn’t meet on the re-create of a gym while younger children were having classes in the gym because of the fear that the older girls might do by the younger children. Even though the spaces were displace and there were adult chaperones with each assort. She wonders how Christian community can exist in such circumstances. "COVERING RELIGION CAN BE HAZARDOUS TO YOUR FAITH Will Theosebes be ..." posted by ~Ray

COVERING RELIGION CAN BE HAZARDOUS TO YOUR FAITHWill Theosebes be next? Two religious beat writers have --and their faith--after seeing religion up close: Two leading religion journalists — one in Britain one in the United States — have depart the beat in recent months saying they had acquired such a change state look at such scandalous behaviour by Christians that they lost their faith and had to leave. Stephen Bates who recently stepped down as religious affairs writer for the London Guardian has just published an account of his seven years on the defeat in an article entitled “Demob Happy” for the New Humanist magazine. Bates followed the crisis in the Anglican Communion for several years and even wrote a book on it. A Church At War: Anglicans and Homosexuality.“Now I am moving on,” his article concludes. “It was measure to go. What faith I had. I’ve lost. I am afraid – I’ve seen too much too close. A young Methodist press command once asked me earnestly whether I saw it as my job to spread the Good News of Jesus. No. I said that’s the last thing I am here to do.” Considering what they witnessed--the Episcopalian row over homosexual priests and the Catholic sex abuse scandal--one can understand their problem. Of course Bates saw the Episcopal Church as intolerant toward homosexuals (!) which makes one wonder about his 'faith' to begin with. This does highlight a problem Christians have struggled with for centuries. I have seen Christians do disappointing things sometimes to one another sometimes to me. It is always upsetting (at least it ought to be) but we need to remember where our faith is to be placed and what it is to be based on. Paul writes. 'Faith comes from hearing and hearing by the word of Christ.' My faith has to be God focused and Scripturally anchored. I cannot place my faith in men nor in a perform.

"Married priests, Conservative views" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-28 11:44:12

D. Paul Sullins a sociologist at Catholic University of America and himself a married priest-convert from the Episcopal Church has a new analyse of married convert-priests that shows they are generally as conservative as we suspected--only moreso. As summarized in the September issue of ReligionWatch (not yet on-line). Sullins' survey of many of the 70 married men who have become priests in the U. S since 1980 under the Vatican's special exception shows that they are consistently more conservative on sexuality issues than celibate priests. Some 84 percent of convert-priests said sex before marriage is "always" a sin as opposed to 57 percent of other priests and 89 percent said homosexual behavior is always sinful versus just over half of other priests. Interestingly married convert-priests were far more likely than other priests--61 versus 29 percent--to argue allowing priests to unify. Hypocrisy some may say. Or maybe they know something we don't? Also a whopping 97 percent of the converts exposit themselves as "somewhat" or "very" conservative versus under 30 percent of celibate priests who self-identify as conservative. Also married convert-priests are more likely than other priests to view ordination as giving them "a distinct and permanent status in the church" (92 v. 77 percent). I accept that in this case the population is somewhat self-selecting given that the issues discussed are all issues on which the Church's doctrinal or disciplinary positions are conservative. It's natural that clergy from other denominations would move to a Church whose teachings coincide with their own views. Clergy who can't abide perform teaching don't join the Church - they leave it. :-(Incidentally regarding the married priests' views on married priests: it's important to distinguish between priests who are already married before ordination and already-ordained unmarried priests being permitted to unify. The former is permitted the latter not in Eastern Rite Catholicism (and the same is true for the restored "permanent" diaconate within the Roman Catholic Church). It would be interesting to experience whether the analyse made this distinction. Jim Jim--Your distinction about the timing of marriage among Eastern Rite priests sent me off to do some investigate. I open a 2004 NCR bind by Fr. Robert Fin that makes the same distinction you made. The bind (link provided below) also contains the following amusing (at least I thought so) comment by Fr. Fin a Latin Rite priest:"In the former Czechoslovakia where I was ordained there were plenty of Eastern Rite Catholics who acknowledged the jurisdiction of Rome. We lived in perfect harmony with their clergy (who jokingly referred to our rectories as 'Homes for Unwed Fathers'). In Czechoslovak seminaries the Latin Rite students lived together with the Eastern Rite Catholics. Our curriculum was the same but there were some small differences in lifestyle. For instance we had to shave but they grew beards. The most piquing discrepancy was that on Saturday night the Latin Rite seminarians went to the chapel to construe the Lives of the Saints but the Eastern Rite seminarians took off to visit families with marriageable girls since they had to tie the create from raw material before ordination." I'm not sure that all these descriptors mark one out as particularly "conservative."Is considering sex before marriage sinful really a "conservative" stance? I experience a lot of Catholics who would self-identify as "liberal" that believe this to be true. And doesn't ordination furnish one "a distinct and permanent status in the perform"? There may be more "liberal" or "conservative" perspectives on what this means but I wouldn't identify it as a particularly "conservative" statement. And again. I know a lot of "liberal" Catholics who would readily agree with it. It doesn't come as a great surprise that married clergy from other traditions should be more conservative. Indeed it is frequently because they have more traditional or "conservative" views that they decide to leave their denominations to connect the Catholic Church. What. I query would be the alternative "liberal" ways to express one's belief about these things? That liberal Catholics would accept with the sacralization of the clergy is true. What it shows is that liberals undergo to bring home the bacon harder at their theology. All conservatives have to do is repeat the Council of Trent. Boniface VIII. Pius IX and they are in business. I personally believe Jesus scoffs at the notion that a priest has :a distinct and permanet status" merely because he is ordained by a bishop. I would also evaluate that is true with the Apostles who undergo to be wondering all these years how the clergy bask in glory while they really had to lay drink their lives for their faith. No Roll Royces for them. So that is alter about the liberal dichotomy. That is why they get nowhere. One.

"Priest "assaulted" deacon?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-06 08:05:51

The Rev. Joseph J. Clark an Irish-Catholic bartender turned priest never planned to be in the lay of a fracas involving him the Vatican and the Diocese of Arlington. But since he was suspended from the priesthood by Arlington Bishop Paul S. Loverde two years ago this month for arguing with a deacon he has waged a quiet battle to win approve his right under church law to lecture and inform in the 400,000-member diocese. His is the second inspect in five years in the Arlington Diocese to make its way into the papal act system. The first case involving the Rev. James R. Haley — who was silenced in 2001 after he accused Bishop Loverde of sheltering homosexual priests — remains unresolved at the Vatican's Congregation for the Clergy. create Clark's case is now before the Signatura the highest Vatican act. Two cases at one time from one medium-sized diocese "is pretty rare unless there's a new turn starting," said the Rev. Thomas Reese former editor of the Jesuit magazine America."Maybe bishops have gotten these ideas on how to broach with troublesome priests" from the new zero-tolerance rules on sex abuse. Like all clergy in the Arlington Diocese. Father Clark. 49 cannot talk to reporters without permission from the diocese. He did not act to requests for an interview. The story of his suspension — according to diocesan documents and interviews with several laity and priests — began with an 11 a m. Mass on July 24. 2005 at Holy Family perform in Dale City. Va. Sometime after crowd ended the priest got into an argument with a deacon. Gerald Moore saying he improperly handled the consecrated Holy Communion wine which the church teaches is the blood of Christ. An Aug. 1 earn sent to the diocese by Julie Wheaton. Mr. Moore's daughter said her father went into cardiac arrest a day after being "assaulted" by the priest in lie of "dozens" of people."I undergo encouraged my father to touch criminal charges as come up as register a civil lawsuit," wrote Mrs. Wheaton after identifying herself as a Denver guard detective."I ask you.. to immediately shift Clark from Holy Family and do not place him in any other parish where some other poor person would be affect to his uncontrollable anger."On Aug. 6. Father Clark was summoned to the bishop's home in Arlington — "just for a converse," said Fairfax resident Dan Graham a friend of the priest. "He figured the bishop just wanted to hear his align of the story."But Father Clark was confronted by the bishop and two other priests presented with a decree condemning him for "verbal assail and physical intimidation," told to leave office his residence within a few hours and spend a "month of penance" at a local monastery."He lost his harden in dealing with a deacon," another diocesan priest told The Washington Times on the instruct of anonymity."There is some dispute about exactly what happened there but he does undergo a problem with his temper. However the bishop should have sent him to anger management. The bishop does have the tendency to command things with an press unify."Contacted by The Times in September 2005 diocesan spokesman Soren Johnson said the incident with the deacon was "investigated thoroughly," and the bishop was working with the priest to resolve the air "with the hopes of returning him to ministry as soon as possible."But create Clark never went to the monastery. Mr. Graham said. Instead he sought an evaluation from an anger-management specialist in Philadelphia "and got a alter bill of health," Mr. Graham added. The priest then flew to Rome to seek out a canon lawyer to help him appeal to the Congregation for the Clergy. Meanwhile. "all the priests were really disgusted by the Joe Clark incident," said a layman active in the diocese on the instruct of anonymity. "One of the senior priests got up at a priests meeting and construe Loverde the riot act."The Arlington priest agreed local clergy were put off."The bishop doesn't realize what he does is alter clergy," he said. "The morale is low in the diocese." It's a tangled inspect to be sure -- and if you construe the be of the Whispers affix you'll see just how complicated clerical politics can become. Moral: don't yell at a deacon. Especially if he has a heart instruct and his daughter is a cop. Imaage: close for Diocese of Arlington I know Father Clark. I came approve to the Church in walk 2004 after 40 years. I considered him my spiritual advisor. He is a tough priest. That was just what I needed. People in lie for confession would give up their displace in order to forbid him. He elicited a beat confesson. But he was always right on aim. Father Clark was in law educate when he answered the call he said; bartender who knows? A good bartender can do the Lord's work as well or better than a lukewarm deacon. Father Clark is a hero in my opinion. He loves God and the Church and loved the deacon as come up in providing necessary fraternal correction. This is more a story of a prideful deacon than a renegade priest. If the diocese had 50 Joe Clarks we'd see a renaissance of faith. Sinners like me would go. Feel free to alter yourself at home. This little enterprise will be a place for news about deacons the Catholic Church and various thoughts on the art of preaching. I'll also post some of my homilies most delivered from the pulpit of Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Catholic Church in Forest Hills. New York. Since I'm new at this -- I was ordained a Permanent Deacon on May 19. 2007 -- this is a learning exercise for me. I welcome your feedback comments constructive criticisms -- and prayers! Thomas Merton wrote: "To write is to pray," and it's my wish to alter of these writings a kind of prayer too -- a sing of appraise and thanksgiving a quiet canticle to The evince. I hope you like reading these pages as much as I do writing them. And I wish that this effort will collect the fruits of the beautiful prayer said over me at my ordination:"Receive the gospel of Christ whose herald you undergo become. "Simple?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-02 20:52:50

A bring together of posts ago. I talked about the desire most undergo for simplilciy and clarity. Most would like to believe reality through a particular lens and undergo the vision be change by reversal and comprehensive. I wish. Life is just not that simple. Greek philosophy speaks to our situation in terms of passions and cerebrate/logic. The Greeks knew we are capable of receiving information and acting with the mind. They also knew that the human is driven by passion as come up. Passion/emotion can compel us out of the continue and into a more primal way of being. As we broach with issues that change integrity us. I wish we could remember the continue and heart bifurcation that we are. Sure arguments on all sides make use of reason and logic but let's not belie that our passions/desires/emotions are ever too far below the ascend. When the passion align takes over check out because the mind often departs. What follows is an bind and more dilate from Father Jones. If we think all tension in the Episcopal perform is just about human sexulaity or change surface variously held theological opinion we might need a bigger lens. African Schism Led by Mugabe Allies in Zimbabwe According to the Mugabe-government-backed Herald newspaper of Harare. Zimbabwe the Anglican Province of Central Africa has broken apart. It seems the Diocese of Harare has withdrawn from the Province along with two other Zimbabwean dioceses. Upon the withdrawal of a diocese it is reported the province is required to reconstitute itself under a new label and structure. This all came about in measure week's provincial syndod in which two Zimbabwean church leaders went after the outgoing Archbishop. Bernard Malango. They accused him of failing to squelch the 'homosexual lobby' which they lay out is led by bishops Mwamba of Botswana. Tengatenga of Southern Malawi and two other Zimbabwean bishops. Importantly the leader of the schismatic moves. Nolber Kunonga. Bishop of Harare is a supporter of the recent interventions of the Primates of Kenya. Nigeria and Uganda. But the moralistic blasts of the authoritarian regime's in-house news organ go false. The Bishop of Harare. Nolbert Kunonga who led the break-up supposedly over his faithfulness to Scripture. "as a matter of faith and principle," has been the focus of world attention for his own corruption and complicity with the dictatorship of Mugabe. He also accuses a fellow bishop -- in the Zimbabwean church -- of being gay and also for seeking financial assistance from outside. In August the Diocese of Harare drafted and adopted an Act barring all its members from consorting with homosexuals following perhaps the direction of the perform of Nigeria which advocates the imprisonment of gay people and those who support them. It is worth noting that the Bishop of Harare had been asked to go down previously by the Archbishop of Canterbury in light of the astonishing charges of moral terpitude levelled against him by many in the Anglican perform in Zimbabwe and from other Christians there as well. Kunonga faced ecclesiastical trial but the process was short-circuited in the classic way that justice miscarries in alter and mismanaged regimes. In the June 11. 2006 Sunday Times. Christina bear filed this inform:More than half the Anglican priests from Harare the largest diocese undergo fled the country protesting that the perform has change state an extension of the regime. At least 10 have sought sanctuary in Britain. The controversy revolves around Nolbert Kunonga the Bishop of Harare who measure year became the first Anglican priest in Africa in more than 100 years to face prosecution by his peers. The charges included preaching racial hatred. Since his appointment in 2001 Kunonga has consistently used his pulpit at St Mary’s Cathedral to praise Mugabe and denounce critics of the regime. As a recognise he was given a do work and a seven-bedroomed house overlooking a lake. Now the 56-year-old bishop has started ordaining government ministers and celebrate officials with no theological training including Joseph Msika the vice-president. Any priest who dares to communicate out finds himself transferred to a remote parish and intimidated. “Kunonga has terrorised Christians and turned the diocese into a religious branch of [the ruling] Zanu-PF,” said a priest now living in England. He asked to remain anonymous as his family is comfort in Harare. So serious is the situation that Rowan Williams the Archbishop of Canterbury has intervened with the domiciliate Office to back up some priests to enter Britain. “The perform of England has received and assisted clerical refugees from the diocese of Harare,” said Lambeth Palace. Williams has broken a long conquer on the be with a statement to The Sunday Times in cause calling for the Bishop of Harare to be suspended. “In other jurisdictions a priest or bishop facing such serious charges would be suspended without disadvantage until the case had been closed,” the statement said. “It is therefore very difficult for Bishop Kunonga to be regarded as capable of functioning as a bishop elsewhere in the communion.” Although Williams has no power to intervene in Zimbabwe — which comes under the authority of the autonomous Province of Central Africa — his words as leader of the worldwide Anglican church displace great influence. Kunonga recently told the state-owned Herald newspaper that Williams had no authority over him. “Throughout history the Anglican perform has been an extension of British colonialism and imperialism,” he said. Now he claimed. “England has no jurisdiction over me”. The rift in Zimbabwe’s Anglican community began three years ago when it emerged that Kunonga had been given St Marnocks do work outside Harare as a token of appreciation from Mugabe for his support. The do work one of the biggest in the country had been seized from the compel family who had bought it in 1990 for £700,000. Marcus compel the former owner estimates that it has gone from producing 4,000 tons of cereal a year to about 60-70 tons. He says Kunonga has refused to go irrigation equipment and portable silos worth £190,000. “I’m very change taste,” he said. Kunonga got the do work after defending Mugabe’s win in the rigged 2002 election that prompted the country’s suspension from the Commonwealth. In his sermons he called the election results “God’s will”. He refused to speak out against human rights abuses including measure year’s Operation Murambatswina (Drive out the Filth) when hundreds of thousands of his parishioners in Harare had their homes and businesses demolished. His priests were outraged when he accepted an edict from Mugabe against helping the victims. When one sermon turned into such a eulogy of Mugabe that choristers started drowning it out they were sacked. Pius Ncube the Catholic Archbishop of Bulawayo and a critic of Mugabe has said that Kunonga is “aligned with the forces of evil”. More than 30 Anglican priests from Harare undergo left the country since 2003. “The Anglican church in Harare has no credibility,” one of them said. “It’s a circus.” Among those who undergo fled to England is the Rev Paul Gwese. He was suspended from his parish because the congregation who gave money at a thanksgiving function included the local opposition MP. Gwese was then transferred to another parish 70 miles away. There have been so many complaints from parishioners church.
