The Golden Compass a fantasy film starring Nicole Kidman is scheduled to open in theaters on December 7. 2007. The film is based on Phillip Pullman’s. “His Dark Materials” trilogy of children’s books that follows the adventures of a street-wise girl who travels through multiple worlds populated by witches armor-plated bears and sinister ecclesiastical assassins to defeat the oppressive forces of a senile God. Pullman’s books have sold more than 15 million copies around the world and won a number of awards. Parents and grandparents please beware. Here is the problem. Phillip Pullman is an avowed atheist who has said. “I don’t think it’s possible there is a God.” His critics have consistently documented his strong anti-religion and anti-God themes. Two years ago. Laura Miller wrote an article titled. “” for The New Yorker magazine. In it she gives a thorough overview of Pullman his work and his beliefs or lack thereof. She says Pullman in his trilogy has a young girl. Lyra Belacqua becoming enmeshed in an epic struggle against a nefarious church known as Magisterium. Another character an ex-Nun turned particle physicist named Mary Malone describes Christianity as. “A very powerful and convincing mistake.”She says Pullman once told an interviewer that. “Every single religion that has a monotheistic god ends up by persecuting other people and killing them because they don’t accept him.”Peter Hitchens a conservative British columnist published an article in 2002 titled. ” in which he called Pullman the writer. “Atheists would have been praying for if atheists prayed.”He says the third in the trilogy. “The Amber Spyglass,” in which God dies is so loaded with propaganda that you can’t help but wonder if the praise and prizes that have been handed the author are because of his views rather than his writing. Hitchens quotes Pullman as saying. “I hate the Narnia books. I hate them with deep and bitter passion.”Hitchens also says Pullman told the Oxford Literary Conference in August 2000. “We’re used to the Kingdom of Heaven; but you can tell from the general thrust of the book that I’m of the Devil’s party like Milton.”Hitchens says none of it makes sense. He says. “Political correctness creeps in leadenly. There is a brave African king and a pair of apparently homosexual angels. The one religious character who turns out to be benevolent is that liberal favorite an ex-nun who has renounced her vows and lost her faith.”Within the next few weeks ads will begin running on television in your area. They will be warm fuzzy and appealing to children and the parents and grandparents who love them. This movie is based on the least offensive of the three books. From what I have been told they have sanitized the most offensive parts because they do not want to offend the faith community. Reviews are already being written and they are positive. In the era of Harry Potter many parents will see the film and probably not be offended or concerned. Keep in mind the movie has been dumbed down. It will not be as stridently atheistic and anti-Christian as the books. The movie is certainly intended to be a profit center however in a greater way; it is intended to be a vehicle to sell books. Pullman has sold millions of books worldwide but has not had a lot of exposure in the U. S. This is the beginning of a sustained marketing campaign. Kids and parents or grandparents will see the movie – many will not be troubled it. They will then see the books at Borders. Barnes and Noble. Costco or wherever. Their kids will recognize the books and want them – parents will be familiar with them from the movie and buy them because the movie wasn’t that troubling and the kids will then take a journey into an atheist anti-Christian world hand-in-hand with Phillip Pullman. In the third book of the trilogy. God will die and everything you have taught your kids about faith and God will have been challenged and mocked. Please pass on this one. Actually if we properly understand that the Magisterium refers to the Roman Catholic Church - and see all the vileness and evil and murder that has come from this whorish institution (Rev 17) then this movie is a perfect portrayal of the book of Revelations in this regard. Martin Luther I believe would something of the savior??Oddly of course. Martin also turned violent and murdered those "heretics" who did not believe like him. Calvin was clearly a psychopath (any brief reading of Genveva's history with all the violence and murder by his government was how this) etc. Well maybe the portrayals are not all that wrong.. Here is my only concern with this blog. Pullman is referenced via Hitchins - I would much rather that we received Pullman's references directly from his own writing than from Hitchins. In my own mind it is all much to do about nothing - we (at least the genuine disciples) already know we do not battle against flesh and blood i e political acitivism. Gary,It is so sad that anyone with an ounce of intelligence and/or education cannot see the "handwriting" of God that is SO evident in this world!And then that there are so many who would follow like a zombie and believe the stuff those people put out!Let's put aside anything that would be termed mystical. Let us just look at a seed. Yes a seed! ever since time immemorial seeds of all sorts have been planted in the earth - left to "die" of what it was and in its place over a basically determined time a shoot that doesn't resemble the seed planted starts to show! As the sun and rain "blesses" that patch of ground the sprout grows bigger and bigger! Still it looks nothing like the seed that was planted! Over a "season" the stock produces a "fruit" of some kind! In that fruit are more seeds that are recognizable as what was first planted in the ground!!! This cycle has gone on over the many years that life has been here on earth! Seeds of all kinds including humans! The "seed" of a father and the "seed" of a mother come together and start a new life! There is no way in WHATEVER that that process could take place year after year century after century eon after eon without there being a Supreme designer or GOD! These basics have been from the beginning. Any variation may have resulted with tampering! Tampering especially from the OTHER spirit that is present in this world! If true Christian believers pray for their children for a hedge around them to protect them from being harmed by the OTHER spirit then they do not need to carry a burden that God never intended them to carry! It is called trusting in the Lord with all their heart and not leaning on their own understanding. Acknowledging the Lord in all they do so He will make their path straight.
Human - I have to ask you can you not FORGIVE John Calvin and any other "heretics"? They and all other people of any time in history acted based upon what they perceived was accurate and true - whether it was or not should be left up to God to "judge". You see unless you can truly forgive those you deem "violent murderous" in the name of God (as they saw fit) the Bible warns us that God will NOT forgive us! Remember the Word said. "Forgive others AS God forgave you." For you to continue to harangue about how YOU perceive John Calvin and his treatment of especially Cervantes is NOT to be exercising the forgiveness God did for you. Remember also when the disciples asked Jesus how many times they should forgive someone 7 times 7? Jesus response was "seventy times seven"! We are to do none the less! Calvin was not a psychopath! I wonder what you would have done or been like had God had you live during that time in history and not knowing what you do today!? Remember also. Paul persecuted those who followed "The Way". God called him to a very great mission! God allowed all those believers to be murdered killed martyred or whatever you want to call their "fate". Jesus says to us. "What is that to you? You do what I want YOU to do!"
