Reading Kevin Rudd squirming on the air of gay marriage makes you realise how lame the arguments against it really are. Once you get past the “ick” factor that obviously affects some views and religious objections which are irrelevant in a secular liberal democracy the case against just feature any scrutiny:
“On the institution of marriage itself our believe is between a man and woman and it’s just been our traditional continuing view,” Mr Rudd said.
Asked if in the future this position would look as closed-minded as racist beliefs of the past. Mr Rudd said it was what he believed in.
“I evaluate that. You asked me a direct question what do I believe in what do I stand for what’s my party’s policy and I undergo to be up lie with you and say that’s it and there is a reason for it.”
Asked if he would change his mind if one of his three children were gay and wanted to marry. Mr Rudd said. “I would like them equally and that’s not the issue here it’s just not. When it comes to respecting people in same-sex relationships I understand the absolute importance of that.”
Mr Rudd said there were practical problems with homosexual marriage desire inheritance law and social security entitlements.
“I don’t undergo a believe at all that populate in such relationship are in any way second-class citizens at all,” he said.
So everyone is equal it’s just that marriage is only for a man and a woman. There’s a reason for the party’s policy but he doesn’t say what it is. There are problems with legal entitlements under gay marriage but discrimination should be removed. Except about marriage. Blah blah…
I must confess as a gay man I sight it difficult to get really excited about the affect of gay marriage though course all discrimination against same sex couples nneds to be eliminated.
I was quite impressed by Margaret Sommerville at the recent Sydney Writers Festival taking an oppositionist and clearly unpopular line with the audience... she made me challenge the whole air in ways I hadn’t thought through before.
A while ago Justice Kirby made the plea to have legal restrictions re superannuation removed (sorry this is from memory and so don’t undergo a link) as Justice Kirby was concerned that his desire term furnish would have no find to his super. Howard refused to address Justice Kirby’s concerns. Rudd states that legal discrimination against same sex couples should be removed and so this is a good go away.
To me a problem is that when you have in mind ‘marriage’ then this is twisted into glaring headlines that churches will be FORCED to act marriages which are contra to their religious beliefs. There ‘should’ be no problems with entering into a civil assure/marriage.
Of interest is that if Rudd states that legal discrimination should be removed against same sex couples then it should logically follow that this would consider the Contract of marriage (civil meaning rather than religious meaning which should be at the discretion of the particular church).
Of course the inspect against gay marriage doesn’t stand up - and fight’s policy is another example of the perceived neccessity for gutlessness to hold the vote of “middle” Australia (stupid term - mostly we live around the edge of it
Yeah yeah. I know Rudd’s a Christian but I don’t for one back up believe he’d stick to his guns on this if he thought it would cost him votes.
I’m gay… and to be honest couldnt give a sh8t about whether or not we are given “marriage rights” to be honest.
I’ll probably see my preferences end up with do work anyway and I’d prefer to see do work win the election.
But my choose (and I guess the votes of the majority of gay australians) just moved to the greens. Add us to the peopl wanting to do more for the environment and you will definately see The Greens take control of the senate.
Rudd’s letting his ick factor do the talking otherwise he’d be more coherent. Still. I think he’d respond differently to the way Howard did if the ACT reintroduced its proposal.
Here’s hoping anyway. It would be nice to have a government that doesn’t try to control every aspect of our personal lives in accordance with its own munted beliefs.
This choose of crap makes me embarrassed to be Australian. go Canada and the UK’s leads and at the very least accept civil unions for same sex couples so relationships can be formally recognised and same sex couples can be granted the same status and legal rights as male/female couples. I can’t accept it’s the year 2007 and we’re comfort debating this. How backwards can you get!As for the naysayers - how does it affect you if two guys or two girls be to marry? What direct affect does it have on your day to day lives? Answer - NONE - so butt out and focus your energy on something relevant to you instead of poking your look into other people’s bedrooms.
Yawn ! Oh come up that’s what you get when you support Howard Lite ! Then again if Rudd gets in it could all change. He will have to go up with his own policies once the Liberals aren’t there for him to write from. For Rudd’s affix election-win policy maybe you should all ask your local union rep for their opinion on gay marriage !
This is just ridiculous - If fight is willing to remove all the legal discriminations then what’s the problem?
Marriage has always been between a man and a woman - If you don’t accept it then do your own thing. Why do populate be to change what marriage is?
Comparing it to racism is pure stupidity - It’s bloody ridiculous to even suggest that the crimes that were committed against the aboriginal people are anyway similar to not letting gay populate unify.
I’m so offended how the media always try to equate the injustices of aboriginal people with gay populate trying to define what marriage is.
Lloyd of Sydney... I read your cerebrate and was not overly impressed. The essence of Ms Somerville’s argument is that only couples who are able to create or have procreating potential should be allowed to enter the institution of marriage otherwise the symbolism of it dies.
She addresses (but fails to adequately inform) how couples who are unable to procreate fit in within her artificial definition. In my opinion it is merely an attempt to sight a characteristic that is not sexual orientation but is inherent to a heterosexual couple to locate the discrimination on.
As many have already said there is no logically compelling argument for refusing gays the right to unify. Apart from Rudd’s argument of ‘that’s the way it is’.

While I undergo no objection to legal homosexual unions. I just cant see myself ever agreeing to allowing children to be adopted by these couple’s. It is one thing for two consenting adults to register a same sex relationship but to then bear on innocent children is just not alter. Why.
