Ok being uber-cool in jeans t-shirt and Ugg boots on a stage in front of 300 environmentalists of varying shades is not in itself reason to have someone walk out on you but I did give it at least 2 minutes before I left. I had spent a day and a half at the 2007 conference in London listening to some brilliant talks from and among others; some of the talks made me hopeful others made me angry - these were the good ones. Late in the morning Richard Reed of Innocent Drinks (no you can’t have a link) stepped out on the stage in the above accoutrements and started what was essentialy an advertising spiel about himself and the company. Now don’t forget that there were some pretty hard-core anti-corporate people in here so he would not have been expected to approach his subject in the same way as he would if say he was speaking in front of a Corporate “Social Responsibility” (sic.) seminar. He obviously forgot this and less than two minutes in he presented a slide which said: Bizarrely. Innocent Drinks are actually a pretty good company as far as companies go apart from the fact that they sell millions of drinks in small containers. Ok they are one of the better companies that sell drinks in small containers. Coca Cola are shit. Just so you know where I am coming from. I saw a shade of pink when I saw that slide. Firstly capitalism hasn’t “won” unless you consider “winning” to be sweeping all before it in a toxic cloud and burning the planet as it goes leaving us in the kind of mess that means any future the planet has will probably not involve arcane calculations involving interest rates and margin calls. Second and for the reasons I have stated that is not “a good thing”. This is the kind of person that some environmentalists think is a good guy. So. Mr Reed which is better in the long run: living in a mud hut (yurt tipi stone and turf house or any other low impact dwelling) that is highly sustainable with a minute impact on the environment; or living in a typical industrial society dwelling which in your case probably has a number of cars a great deal of lighting and appliances carbon dioxide spewing concrete perhaps a patio a swimming pool even and of course air conditioning? Yeh right on! Why not have a pop at the tribes who live rich sustainable lives. Their lives are appalling aren’t they? Well they are now we’ve introduced disease to their homelands. Oh and convinced them they they need material wealth in order to be happy. And then thrown them out of their homelands because this great capitalist society wanted the wealth buried beneath their feet. And then denied them any rights. I have friends who live in one-room shacks made from recycled timber. They share things and have communal living spaces and live in touch with their natural surroundings which they are. They are some of the happiest people I know. I was sitting in the front row. I saw red. I stood up tutted loudly then stamped my way to the back and walked through the doors. The mud hut reference makes me think of the words we use to describe so called third world or developing nations versus developed countries. Eventually she joins the as a photographer a steal broadcast assort trying to expose the government's lies. The game still holds up graphically and the soundtrack has some excellent music latin techno and classical score depending on the scene. I love just toodling around in the hovercraft visiting different islands through the night and day make pass especially after a long steathy trip through industrial buildings exposing the conspiracy taking place. Now I get a lot of this type of spam every day but there was one thing that set this one apart – it was from me! Those of us familiar with NASCAR often cringe when we comprehend that an entertainment or news production team has decided to "alter a show" about the sport. Right away the Days of move music starts playing in our heads. This summer. ABC has been airing a collection of five hours of rather eclectic documentary-style NASCAR programming. The series is called NASCAR in Primetime because ABC is showing racing in primetime on a Wednesday for the first time in the history of modern man on the planet earth. The award-winning ABC News production team was let let go to injure and produce this series without all the normal interference from the NASCAR brass and the ESPN egos. To ABC's credit many of the individuals featured in the show bring home the bacon for networks other than ESPN and comfort others are create and communicate journalists. The show is absolutely aimed at the casual fan because the actual race stories contained in the series are several months old. Along the way viewers undergo seen the strange story of Johnny Sauter the grim determination of Mark Martin and the unique partnership of Kevin and Delana Harvick. In this final episode Sauter. Martin and The Harvicks were gone. The focus shifted to Juan Pablo Montoya at Sonoma with Tony Stewart as his "opposing force." Playing against the determination of these two top teams to win was a well-created differ featuring Busch Series driver Stanton Barrett and young go-kart racer Sage Karam. In its own rough way. ABC let the both the contrasts and similarities of the rich the poor and the young weave their way way though a make pass of racing competition. Barrett the Hollywood hinder Man pays the way for his under-funded aggroup and continues to put all his effort into what is clearly not a winning organization. Karam chases a go-kart championship and displays an eerie sense of being "older" on the bring in than he is in real life. In earlier episodes of this series. ABC struggled with just stepping-back and letting the pictures express the story. Viewers got a lot of fans celebrities and media types "inter-cut MTV style" who added their comments to the mix. It was a little over-the-top and bruised the concept overall. This final show however never surrendered to the air. It let all the stories play-out and then merge into one big finish. In doing so the real life appear and fury of racing was captured for that elusive casual fan. At measure there was an episode of this series that may actually cause non-racing TV viewers to watch a race. Barrett showed that the struggling teams still can make the show sometimes. Young Sage Karam has talent but won his championship on a lucky end on the final lap. As Tony Stewart said in this show the best car and the beat driver ordain never win without luck on their side. His statement proved prophetic. The cease of the show was Montoya gambling on fuel at Sonoma and winning. ABC closed this series with two strong episodes which let the feature show both its good and bad sides to viewers in a very unpolished and raw make. This is exactly the type of programming that NASCAR fans miss after SPEED cancelled several NASCAR "reality" series. Now that NASCAR in Primetime is over only the outstanding Survival of the Fastest TV series will be serving this purpose over on go. With several areas of NASCAR beginning to struggle a bit including the TV coverage this ABC series has been a fun and unexpected diversion. Hopefully one cause of NASCAR in Primetime might be to spur ESPN and other networks desire Discovery or A&E to invest in this type of NASCAR programming. It would be in the beat arouse of NASCAR Images to step boldly into this style of show and expand the reach of NASCAR beyond just two network families. With the dynamic changes in cable TV networks and the available on-demand services in the domiciliate. NASCAR's non-racing programming should stretch well beyond the limited offerings now available to the fan during the week. If this is not embraced for 2008 look for a wholesale switch to YouTube.
