por Danae C. DiéguezFui de las que leímos “Vestido de Novia” a finales de los ochenta y quedé bajo el estado del encantamiento. Pasó el tiempo y mi trabajo como profesora de Literatura en el ISA y él como estudiante de Teatrología me dieron la posibilidad de conocerlo y disfrutarlo ahora de una manera diferente alejada de la palabra escrita. Ya lo acompañaba cierta aura de “muchacho de lengua terrible” con la que disfruto mucho casi siempre y por supuesto una carrera literaria fortalecida además de una cultura sólida que convierte cualquier diálogo con él en un mundo de múltiples referencias. De allí provienen los primeros pasos de nuestra amistad que hoy tiene además del paso de los años la sedimentación muy especial de la geografía donde ambos habitamos nuestra periférica ciudad alamareña espacio de largas conversaciones muchas de las cuales son el sustrato de esta entrevista. Alguna vez has dicho que a tu poema “Vestido de novia” debes muchas cosas. “probablemente más de las que merezca”. Recuerdo el suceso ya comentado por otros que significó para muchos leer ese poema. Teniendo en cuenta que tenías diecisiete años y ahora ya rebasado tus treinta. ¿que opinión te merece esa primera etapa de tu poesía?—Hace poco regresé de Santa Clara y cumplí algo que quería hacer que era hurgar en mis viejos papeles que estaban acumulados en un gran desorden y rescaté un enorme conjunto de manuscritos y de textos mecanografiados de esa primera etapa de mi poesía. Quería que estuvieran conmigo aquí en la Habana porque ahí están acumulados todos los textos que rodearon aquellos que después definitivamente integraron Las breves tribulaciones mi primer libro. Fueron solo diecinueve poemas entresacados de ese casi centenar de los cuales la mayoría espero nunca vea la luz.«Pero de una manera u otra para mí se hizo importante tener a la mano otra vez esos papeles y volver a esa edad que tú acabas de mencionar ya pasados los treinta para repensar lo que ha sido la poesía que uno puede escribir o trata de escribir en un país donde la poesía es un discurso más… pero no un discurso menos. La autobiografía para mí es una página todavía por salvar. Creo que la mejor autobiografía que puedo escribir está en mi poesía examineás por eso quise tener esos textos conmigo.«“Vestido de novia” es la parte más visible de esa zona de mi primera poesía una parte que se hizo visible a pesar mío cuando el poema empezó a correr de boca en boca por toda Cuba antes de ser publicado y creo que sigo teniendo ante él la misma mezcla de estupor y de desconcierto con la cual supe que ese poema iba a regresar de una manera o de otra a mis manos.«Definitivamente cuando uno se entrega al oficio de la escritura tiene que asumir cosa a veces muy dolorosa la noción de que los textos si la gente puede reconocer en ellos alguna verdad poco a poco se van haciendo autónomos y comienzan a tener una vida propia de la cual el autor no va a tener ya ningún control y definitivamente eso ha pasado con “Vestido de Novia”. Si bien para mucha gente mi rostro es el de ese poema ese poema ha logrado tener para muchas otras personas un rostro independiente y eso me ha permitido no reaccionar con angustia o con ira al descubrirlo digamos en una pagina web donde nunca supe que estaba y de pronto aparece ante mis ojos o cuando descubro que una vez más en una antología publicada Dios sabe dónde ese texto aparece sin mi consentimiento o con las erratas de su primera edición. El está en una dimensión yo estoy en otra.»Tus dos libros de poesía publicados: Las breves tribulaciones y Las estrategias del páramo se pueden leer cada uno como un único texto poético. Sobre todo el segundo me parece un libro con una tremenda coherencia. Más que una suma arbitraria de textos es una summa poética cuidadosa. ¿Cuándo sientes que tienes en tus manos un libro de poesía acabado?—Yo creo que la conciencia crítica es muy importante en cualquier escritor sobre todo la autoconciencia crítica. La poesía tiene todavía para mí ese sentido y esa fe a pesar de que cada día soy más descreído y más escéptico. Las estrategias del páramo es un libro en el cual de alguna manera yo quise mostrar mi propia capacidad de autoconciencia; volví a tomar textos del primer libro que se distribuyó muy mal se vendió muy mal en el sentido no de que no se agotara sino de que en pleno Periodo Especial poner a circular un libro era francamente una especie de broma pesada; y para que los textos que me interesaban de ese primer cuaderno sobrevivieran los incluí junto a los que había escrito después de la salida de ese primer volumen.«El libro esperó varios años en una gaveta de la editorial Unión hasta que Alex Pausides lo rescató me permitió poner la portada que yo quería y publicarlo fuera de colección como si existiera en un espacio aparte. Creo que la poesía tiene que tener esa cualidad: la de crear un espacio habitable para el lector. A diferencia de otros autores a los que respeto no me interesa que mi poesía sea un espacio hermético me interesa que se abra y que sin hacer concesiones esa poesía pueda tener ese sentido de espacio en el cual uno dialogue con el texto y se deje reconocer. Creo que por eso mi poesía ha tenido su destino por eso tiene sus lectores. Incluso a pesar de lo que yo pueda pensar de esos mismos lectores.«Así como puedo ser muy crítico con la obra ajena con lo que pasa fuera de mí también puedo tener una determinada voluntad de seleccionar y decantar de lo que me parece que puede ir quedando. Por supuesto esa es una actitud que a sí misma se traiciona. Dentro de 30. 50 años alguien podrá volver a Las breves tribulaciones encontrar un ejemplar de ese libro y rescatar los poemas que yo prohibí como hoy nadie puede prohibir que en las Obras Completas de Borges estén los poemas que él desterró mientras se iba acercando al final de su vida. Pero en vida yo quiero tener el derecho de decidir sobre mi propia obra y cut que hay en ellos una nota que me sirve para entenderme y para entender lo que los demás quieren comprender conmigo.»*Me llama la atención que siendo un poeta tan reconocido y antologado —ahora mismo buscamos en cualquier antología y muchas veces cierra con tu obra— Sin ban después de Las estrategias del páramo no has publicado libros de poesía. ¿A que se debe esto?—Abilio Estévez veía en Las estrategias del páramo el cierre de una época y yo creo que tiene toda la razón. Pero también de alguna manera —y esto lo voy a confesar por primera vez— pasó que no quise ajustarme a lo que podría ser el oficio de “escritor de poesía” distinto a lo que creo significa ser “poeta”. Si algo me angustia de la poesía cubana actual es reconocer cómo importantes figuras que empezaron a crear en un momento determinado han empezado —tal y como ha ocurrido con distintos artistas plásticos— a calcarse a si mismos a repetir los logros y los hallazgos pero perdiendo la intensidad que podían tener sus primeros cuadernos.«Yo no quise verme dentro de ese panorama. Y no es que yo haya dejado de escribir poesía; ahora mismo puedo acumular una decena de poemas inéditos que no me parecen del todo mal pero que han ido surgiendo fragmentariamente y no forman justamente un discurso en sí. Yo creo tener un libro en la mano cuando siento que el período que he vivido se ha reflejado.

Fue una de esas experiencias que no se olvidan. Tan fascinado quedé con una escritura y una mirada que no se parecían a nada que yo conociera que desde 1975 y ya en la cárcel leí todos los demás libros suyos que por entonces se conseguían en la Argentina. Pero la política de silenciamiento de la homosexualidad es tan poderosa que incluso yo un gay que tenía a Foucault como uno de sus faros recién me había enterado de que el filósofo era homosexual varios meses después de su muerte. Y hasta dar con esa entrevista nunca había leído tampoco ninguna de sus reflexiones explícitas sobre la cuestión gay. Con parsimonia pero tensando cada vez más la cuerda. Foucault también decía en esa entrevista: “Debemos empeñarnos en devenir homosexuales y no obstinarnos en reconocer que lo somos”. Y cito otra frase más: “Me parece que tendríamos que ocuparnos no tanto de liberar nuestros deseos sino de volvernos nosotros mismos infinitamente más susceptibles de experimentar los placeres”.
